Melanie has devoted her practice solely to the legal issues affecting First Nations. She provides advice on tribal governance matters and Treaty rights and claims. She also assists First Nations in setting up corporations, not for profit companies and societies which take into account any unique considerations relating to First Nation-owned businesses. Additionally, she provides advice and guidance on various commercial matters, including the preparation and review of contracts and other agreements.
Melanie is a member of the Blood Tribe, which is part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, and was raised on the Blood Indian Reserve in southern Alberta. Her personal background provides her with firsthand insight into and an appreciation of the legal concerns and issues facing First Nations.
Melanie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Lethbridge and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta and was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 1995. She has lectured and presented on a variety of legal issues affecting First Nations.
